It's elegantly simple but fiendishly tricky at the same time, depending how you want to play it. If you just want to whiz through the levels you can finish it in a weekend.īut besides that, it's hard to fault the game for anything. The yellow LocoRoco's theme song, though, is still the happiest song I've ever heard and I have trouble getting it out of my head even now.Īnd if you're not the type that likes to solve jumping puzzles (which can be very frustrating) then it's a renter. They need to go back to the studio and record some new songs for LocoRoco 3 that match catch tunes in the original. If you've played the original most of the themes will already be familiar. So what's not to like? The music, for one. The one where the insects blow you around the maze is back, but there's also a whack-a-mole type game, a sumo-style battle royale (very fun) and a Gradius-type 2D shooter starring the Mui Muis.
And if you want to suss out all the puzzles and collect all the items and points then you can. What I like about this game - and about the original LocoRoco - is that if you just want to fly through the level you can.

You can now get level maps too, to help you discover hidden locations that only trial and error and loads of time would uncover in the first. The plot is almost incomprehensible, spoken in the LocoRoco's own gibberish, but you get a rough idea from the cut scenes. But after that the game and the levels go way beyond anything in the original.Įvery part of the game, including the map and loading screens, is woven into the story somehow. You'll have to play the game to see what happens. It's like seeing them attack one of the mini-games I'd unlocked. Seeing it suddenly involved in the game - and being blasted to bits - was a shock. It may not seem much, but in the original the house you build is just a sidebar, adding depth and a reason to replay levels. Then suddenly the enemy attacked my house. It was a good game, just a kind of by-the-numbers approach. So after a few hours I was feeling a bit disappointed. The same LocoRocos (except one new one), mostly the same music (sometimes redone, usually with recorders), the same enemies, and while the levels are all new, they'll seem very familiar to anyone who's played the original.
Even the singing bits make you play along with a rhythm game.Īt first it seems more like a rehash of the original than a sequel. The sequences where your little blobs are flown all round the screen through giant machines are still there, but there's less of them and they've been shortened. Many gamers thought it played like a glorified tech demo, showing off its (admittedly good) level design at the expense of actual gameplay.
LocoRoco wasn't by any means a perfect game though. With a great soundtrack, brilliantly original levels and little touches of humour, the game won rave reviews.
